• Road Safety

Annually, road crashes result in almost
120 000 fatalities and 1.7 million injuries in the EU. Road traffic injuries represent the leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults.Pedestrians, cyclists and users of motorized two-wheelers constitute 39% of all deaths in road crashes.

They are more likely to be more seriously injured. Many people suffer a temporary or permanent disability from their injury and the families emotionally devastated by the loss of loved ones

Nevertheless, many effective preventive strategies exist, and many European countries are among the safest in the world. There is therefore potential to take up the challenge and reduce the burden of road traffic injuries by applying lessons of good practice.

A good starting- point for this is to understand the baseline situation:

  • Seat belts

Seat belts are the single most effective traffic safety device for preventing death and injury. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of crash injuries by 50 percent. Seat belt laws by themselves led to increased belt use in the country. Enhanced penalties—in particular drivers license points—likely will be needed to reach hard-core nonusers.

  • Helmet

Riding a motorcycle is about much more than getting from point A to point B. It’s about the open road, the wind in your hair and the smell of freedom. But with great freedom comes great responsibility, especially for the safety of you, your kids and those around you. Before you grip the handlebars on your next ride, take a moment to think first… Ask yourself…
…is not wearing a helmet really worth the risk? No matter if you’re in the bike lane, on a dirt trail or a beach path, a crash or fall can happen in a split-second. A helmet can absorb the impact, rather than your head and brain. A helmet can decrease the severity of a brain injury and even save your life.
